“23rd & Union” is a docu-drama that weaves real interviews with fictional characters to investigate the 2008 murder of Degene Berecha in the popular Seattle restaurant “Philadelphia Cheese-Steak”. The director was a friend of the victim and shares mutual acquaintances with the convicted murderer. He completed interviews with a wide range of people familiar with each man to help interpret the circumstances that led to the shooting. The film is an ADAPTED story and is used as a vehicle to discuss gentrification and the tension between young African-American men, Ethiopian immigrants and gay couples in Seattle’s Central District.

Tyrone Stevenson Jr. is better known as Bay-be Champ or The Scraper Bike King. In 2007, Champ and the rap group, The Trunk Boiz, recorded a you-tube music video based around the concept that received over 3 million hits across the globe. The legacy of the Scraper Bike theme song catapulted Champ into stardom and his organization has been growing ever since. The music video
spawned a global sensation and new movement in the national Hip-Hop community. His invention, Scraper Bikes, is a unique form of artistic expression that draws inspiration from the Scraper Car Culture in the Bay Area. His bikes have been featured in countless events such as, The Maker Faire, Grind For The Green and The International Bicycle Film Festival. Along with countless interviews with NPR, The Christian Science Monitor and Current TV; The Scraper Bike Movement has received
much positive feedback from diverse communities all around the world.

Champ has organized countless community events since 2007 in order to bring attention to his grassroots movement that trains young people to work on bikes in order distract them from negative influences in the inner city. Champ is regularly invited as a motivational speaker all
around the world who reaches out to young people and community organizations in order to inspire them to incorporate Hip-Hop into the larger Green Movement. East Oakland is the birth place of the Scraper Bike Movement and the headquarters for Scraper Bikes International.

Tanner Baldridge

Mr. Baldridge has worked on several shorts that have screened around the country. He took his B.A. in Russian Literature and Language and Comparative Literature from the University of Washington in Seattle to San Francisco State University to study in a Cinema Production MFA program. In his first narrative short, shot on 16mm at SF State in 2009, Frozen Goldfish, a Chinese-American girl watches life stand still in a frozen fish pond one winter while her grandmother slips into a coma. As spring approaches her grandmother doesn’t wake up but the pond thaws and the goldfish survive. He is currently in production of a short film adapting F. Dostoevsky’s novella Notes From Underground.

Suntonio Bandanaz, (aka “Asun”) is a core emcee and spearhead of the pioneering Seattle collective of emcees, deejays, b-boys, and other artist- visionaries, known as Alpha P. (also 1st Platoon). Having endured much adversity and struggle in his own coming-of-age, this veteran emcee envisions music as a platform to not only entertain, but also to uplift, unify, and empower by generating knowledge of self, cultural relevance, and artistic expression. Bandanaz is celebrated for his raw skill, his chop and flow, command of double-time and ever sophisticated lyricism.

As an active member of the global hip hop community, Suntonio Bandanaz has shared the stage with some of Hip Hop’s Finest including: Afrika Bambaataa, Dead Prez, Percee P, The Jacka and Living Legends. Through the years, he has also built working relationships with many community-based organizations and crews such as- Project Mayhem, Universal Zulu Nation, Project Blowed, Silent Lambs Project, Tribal, 206-Hop and Hip Hop Congress.

One of Seattle’s most prolific “Underground Hip Hop” emcees on the scene, Suntonio Bandanaz (previously recording as Asun) has created a massive catalogue of independent material on CD, tape, vinyl and video. He has appeared on hundreds of tracks and released over a dozen projects including: Heavenly Ghetto Cuts, The Naps Project, The House That Love Built vol. 1 & 2, Titanium Buttermilk Rhinoceros Briefcase, Codex Di Satio, and West Coast Scavengers 12″. In true-school form, Bandanaz is master of the indy distribution hustle, a local legend who has moved tens of thousands of units hand to hand and in stores.

Most recently, Bandanaz has joined forces with Seattle-based multimedia and record company Fresh Chopped Beats/MADK Productions to produce, “Who is Suntonio Bandanaz?!” (Jan 2010) widely considered the best solo album from Alpha-P recorded to date. Synonymous with an ambient, hardcore, b-boy, and revolutionary element, the record is one of the most anticipated, groundbreaking new projects from the Northwest. With vibrant charisma, moving stage presence, years of experience, and breadth of style, Suntonio Bandanaz is emerging from the fertile belly of Seattle’s underground with a ferocity that is sure to keep your eyes glued.

Stefan Ruenzel is an award-winning filmmaker from Oakland, California whose work spans across narrative, documentary, and experimental realms. Crossing boundaries is important for him personally, as it is within the ideas he portrays on film. A boundless curiosity in people and fascination in the way diverse forms of life interact with the world are the impetus behind his sociological studies… and with a background in photography and music, film became his modern-day think tank ten years ago. Since, he’s worked as DP and editor on a nationally syndicated travel show on PBS, and currently works as a freelance producer and cinematographer in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Grasping to understand a story in order to tell it, serendipity is always welcomed with an open lens. And though a perfectionist on set, direction is not to order, but to collaborate and lead the way in a visual style that’s probably only perfect for one particular project.

In the end, our job is to compel an audience to think, and hopefully to react.
